music i like:

the strokes.

i started listening to the strokes very recently. i always thought they were a parody of the cool, don't-care rock and rollers until i realized they were one of the original don't-care rock and rollers. i admire the simplicity in their instrumentation and the emphasis on the songwriting rather than the production. not that they have bad production, 'cause i can't recall any song of theirs who's sound doesn't match the writing. what i'm saying is; anyone who can make simple tritones sound badass are probably pretty cool.

the song what ever happened? has an uber-catchy hook; being explosive yet longing. julian's voice sounds both nonchalant and drunkenly aggressive that really embodies that touring rocker lifestyle. i also like the song threat of joy featured on the future present past ep. styled after their work from 2001, it features their distinct early sound with a slightly more mature subject matter. in it, he loathes the personal sacrifices he's made for his family but ultimately accepts that he wants to find a new kind of joy with this family he's starting.

also every song on the new abnormal is straight gold.

nsmzq.

nsmzq has one known song called cream. the song seemed to be a promotional song made for some manga magazine in 2010 in collaboration with author tnsk. nsmzq doesn't really have any online footprint to follow. the song itself is awesome. it's lo bitrate makes it sound bombastically trashy, and absolutely crunches the guitars into the cymbals. it sounds kinda like mass of fermenting dregs with a female vocalist belting out over a wave of distortion and crunch, but being played through a discount mp3 player with 2gb of integrated storage. this song absolutely rocks.

okgo.

okgo is band known for their, by no stretch of the definition, awesome music videos. The videos are so cool, you almost forget that you're listening to some super catchy songs. the coolest thing about them is to listen to their experimental sound develop throughout their discography. their earliest work is very guitar driven. 2 guitars, a bass, some drums and maybe a cool synth. by their second album, their drum sound got boomy and it was as if the guitars were directly injected into your ears. by the third album, the opener wtf? just bombards you with synthetic weirdness. their 2010 album of the blue color of the sky is filled with a luscious elctronica texture, the voices echo and swirl while the overdriven rythms form a monstrous wave of pure noise. lead singer damian kulash's vocal performances are saturated to 11 but still bleed his emotions. the 2014 album hungry ghosts just multiplies the funkiness and catchiness 10 fold. the only way i can describe it is as if a bunch of mischevious lil' wind up toy robots took over an abandoned building, and you happened to walk into all of their little willy wonka traps. i hear they're making a new album now so that's uber cool.

weezer.

when i was a cool and trendy 13 year-old, i was gifted a cheap record player and promptly went to the music store to buy a weezer lp to line my shelf. stuck between the green album and pinkerton, i chose pinkerton; a descision i am eternally grateful for. is green bad? no. but pinkerton is just so much better. the album is 31 short minutes of intense raw guitar (and about 3 mins of mournful acoustic guitar!). every song is so straight-forward yet stuffed with emotional weight that just brings your own mood down, but, like, in a cool way. the images described by the lyrics of the album are extremely literal. in fact, they're so literal that they make you feel a bit icky. we're not used to hearing such direct thoughts of how a man imagines a girl who's probably too young for him, or how a man who's so done with relationships would rather just "keep whacking". but, i can't help but appreciate how honest it is, especially when people so often filter their thoughts through euphamisms and societal expections which ultimately makes for dull discussion.

rivers cuomo, lead singer of weezer, is also a pretty interesting guy. he has released so many song demos that fans compile them and make their own custom weezer albums. he also has a few essay's floating around the internet; my favourite being a mad and furious master where he discusses his temporary vow for voluntary celibacy. promptly, shenanigans ensue. keep rockin', your weirdo.
